Great Dane, Saint Hubert, Shetland Shepherd, Weimaraner, Bichon, Dachshund… More than 800 purebred dogs, from the smallest (Chihuahua) to the largest (Irish Wolfhound), will gather on Sunday 27 October 2024 in the Hall of Galuchet, on Noron exhibition center. A total of 173 breeds will be represented at this Dog Festival.
“Your dog will always be the most beautiful in the world”
Thirteen judges will be tasked with observing them from all angles and appointing “best subject of the breed”states Alain Brosseau, president of the Deux-Sèvres territorial dog association, which organizes the event. Then the “winners” will parade in groups (shepherds, mastiffs, terriers, etc.). The best from each of the ten groups will have the privilege of being part of the final parade in the ring of honor, a moment especially appreciated by the public. In the end, two dogs (one young and one adult) will be crowned.
Around 70 volunteers work to ensure that this Dog Festival runs as smoothly as possible. And for families to enjoy the event peacefully, Alain Brosseau advises visitors not to bring their dog, which may be disturbed or stressed and not used to being surrounded by 800 of its peers.
Race confirmation Saturday
Before this regular public Sunday, the Saturday is reserved for owners or breeders of purebred dogs for their confirmation. “Everyone who buys a purebred puppy has a birth certificate with its entire pedigree. As an adult (between 12 and 18 months), it must be confirmed by a certified expert, who will say it is within the breed’s standards.explains Alain Brosseau. He elaborates: “A dog that is too tall, too small, aggressive or with a dental disease will be excluded from purebred dog breeding. »
More than 110 dogs will be judged by six judges. In a few minutes, the experts will assess the size, teeth, color and texture of hair, eyes, morphology, to say whether the animal corresponds to the expected criteria mandatory for reproduction. Alain Brosseau states that around 10% of animals presented are generally rejected. But he immediately adds: “In fact, their dog will always be the most beautiful in the world. He doesn’t want to breed purebred dogs, but what does that mean? You love this dog, it’s perfect for you, not for breeding, so it doesn’t change anything. »
