In the United States, TikTok prosecuted after the death of two young girls – Liberation

The Chinese platform is accused of having caused the death of two American girls aged 9 and 8 who participated in yet another challenge that went viral last year, reviving the debate around access, for the youngest, to the content of social networks.

Arriani Jaileen Arroyo, 9, lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Lalani Erika Renee Walton, 8, lived in Temple City, Texas. The two girls lost their lives respectively on February 26 and July 15, 2021, after taking part in the “Blackout Challenge”, a viral challenge on the Chinese social network TikTok which consists of choking, by any means, until you lose consciousness. Their families, represented by the Social Media Victims Law Center (SMVLC, an American organization that provides legal aid to parents whose children are victims of addictions and abuse on social networks), filed a complaint against TikTok on Tuesday 5 July, in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

This joint complaint calls into question the algorithms of the network broadcasting dangerous content, the non-respect of the ban on use by those under 13, but also the fact that the app does not inform its users or their parents of its addictive nature, lists the Guardian who could consult it. “TikTok must be held accountable for broadcasting deadly content towards these two little girlssays Matthew P.
