Dogs are more sensitive to heat than their owners. When they are warm, they stick out their tongues and speed up their breathing to release the heat, but this costs them a lot of energy and a significant cardiac effort. When temperatures rise, we want to cool off and some people opt for ice cream… and sometimes share it with their dog. If the animal greedily licks the ice cream and seems delighted, is it a good idea for our doggies? It is possible to give it to your dog in small portions and occasionally.
Be careful though, once your dog has licked the ice cream, you can no longer eat it. The dog’s mouth and nose are actually full of bacteria as they sniff everything that comes their way, starting with the feces of other animals.

What is the risk to my dog of eating ice cream?
Ice provides no nutritional benefits to dogs. “Ice cream is made from sugar, fruit and dairy or plant compounds. For sorbet it is water, sugar and fruit. It is therefore not nutritionally interesting food for animals, but it will not poison them! A few sips is therefore not dangerous if it remains exceptional“, veterinarian Géraldine Blanchard explains to 30 Million friends. Certain ingredients are poisonous to dogs, so you have to be careful. Chocolate ice cream should be banned because they contain theobromine, which is very dangerous for dogs.
This substance present in cocoa causes heart and neurological problems which can lead to death. Iced coffee should also be avoided due to caffeine, theophylline and again theobromine. They attack the animal’s brain, heart and kidneys. Even consumed in small amounts, coffee can be fatal to dogs. A final point of vigilance is necessary if the ice has a stick. It is best to take it off as your dog may swallow it.
How do you make dog ice cream?
For the summer season, you can make ice cream for your dog yourself. It is recommended to make them in an ice cube tray so that they are small. The most suitable is fruit ice cream. Nothing could be simpler, just blend or cut fruits such as watermelon, banana, melon or even apple into small pieces and then mix everything with water. But not all fruits can be eaten by your companion. Avocado and grapes are harmful to your dog. It is possible to mix fruit with plain unsweetened yoghurt, but some dogs are lactose intolerant.
You can also choose salty ice cream, which is just as refreshing. Several recipes are very easy to make, starting with defatted chicken fondue. Dog mash or mousse ice cream are also good alternatives. To prevent your dog from consuming too much salty food, you can make ice cream using ham, chicken or carrot baby food. These pots have a low salt content and are therefore very good for your companion. Finally, if you don’t want to start making ice cream, some pet stores already offer it ready-made. To be enjoyed by your dog in moderation!
