This is an experience experienced by many Belgians who go to the terrace of a restaurant during this summer period: wasps invite themselves to meals. Present in large numbers this year following the mild temperatures and favorable to their proliferation known in recent months, they represent a nightmare for both customers and restaurateurs. Everyone has to put up with the unbearable. “Sometimes there are four or five wasps at the table. Our staff have already been stung in full service, ”confides to the Nieuwsblad the manager of the Margherita restaurant, Margherita Mazzocchi.
Beyond the “annoying” aspect, insects also have a negative impact on establishments. “We constantly have to replace the glasses of wine, beer or sodas because wasps end up in them,” adds the manager. If the latter found the solution by systematically placing a box of beer on the glasses, this is not the most pleasant.
After testing many things to ward off wasps (traps, electrocuting electrical device, scented sticks, burnt coffee…), Margherita had to find something more radical. “I bought white veils that give insects no chance of accessing food,” she explains to our colleagues. Or how to combine usefulness with pleasure since it offers a more intimate experience to customers. “I have thought about it and this seems to be the only good solution”, underlines the manager.
So now, Margherita will equip all of its tables, even the biggest ones, with this system. Because the situation should get even worse from August 15, according to some experts.
