“The goal is to make the association known, that people come and meet our animals and if they like them and the home is suitable, for them to adopt,” confirms Claire Reigneaud, the manager of Saint Pierrois. But the needs of the animal must be respected in the family, the lifestyle corresponds to the dog, take into account the presence of other animals in the home… We have people fill out a questionnaire to help us understand them the animal that suits them best . It is always very upsetting for a dog to return to the shelter after a failed placement. Unfortunately, it happens. »
Intended transfers
The shelter can accommodate up to 90 animals, dogs and cats together. If they stay there for an average of fifty days, some wait for their new family much longer. The problem mainly occurs in dogs. Like Aston, a German Shepherd cross that arrived at SPA a year ago. Happy in front of people, but “reactive with the shelter dogs,” notes the manager. Often people already have an animal at home, which limits their options. »
To increase the chances of adoption, transfers to other SPA sanctuaries in France are organized. “To change the crowd,” throws the manager. Generally it works well. “This solution is starting to be considered for Manza, 13 years old, who needs time before he trusts people. “She’s been here over a year. She’s a very sweet dog, but when she doesn’t know people, she can be imposing. She was adopted, but the people died. We have a plan to move to a specialized shelter for the elderly animals in northern France if we can’t find one here.
Other canines are bad in appearance. Here a head too square, like Horus; there, a jaw too wide. “Rider is a very beautiful 4 year old rottweiler, adorable but he is categorized. He was found tied to a chain. He had a lot of followers on social networks when he arrived but since we got him he has unfortunately done a lot less . »
There’s also Odin, a blind German Shepherd found wandering, “adorable with people,” or this Czechoslovakian wolfdog that arrived after an abuse investigation. “He was very thin, infested with fleas, anemic. He had to be hospitalized. The report obviously saved his life.”
At SPA, the stories are never happy. But for everyone there is hope for a happy ending. As for the five cats and four dogs that were adopted at the end of this weekend, and the six other furballs reserved.
SPA open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 13:30 to 17:00. Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 to 12:30 then from 14:00 to 17:30.
