Five kittens were taken to a shelter. Their worries quickly disappeared in a nursing home, especially when two house cats appeared.

Last month, five kittens arrived at the Humane Society of Hamilton County hoping for a chance at a better life. Afraid and uncertain, they huddled together for comfort.
Jennifer, a foster volunteer, opened her home to the kittens and gave them a fresh start in a cozy environment. “They were undersocialized and wheezing when they arrived,” Jennifer Love told Meow.
The first night the kittens snuggled into a cubby bed. Although they hesitated, they seemed curious about their caretaker, who always brought food.

Slowly but surely the kittens began to venture out. Sassafras, the fluffy tortie, was the first to bravely explore beyond the cubby. She was the tiniest wheezer and exuded confidence from the start.
“The (orange) boys (Hickory and Rowan) came around very quickly. Linden (tortie) and Willow (torbie) took a little more time to warm up.”

With the brave kittens leading the way, the more shy ones plucked up their courage and stepped out of hiding to inspect their new space.
They were happy to have meals throughout the day. Some of them, especially Sassafras, grew out of instinct as they ate, declaring the food to be theirs.

Soon they realized they no longer had to compete for food. When Jennifer entered the room with their second breakfast, the kittens broke into an endearing chorus, meowing in harmony until their food was served.
“They have found their voices and are now using them to yell at me for going to work while they were ‘starved back’ all day long.”

Sassafras climbed atop a tower of track toys, the tallest perch she could find, and roared at the top of her lungs. After filling her stomach, she dozed off sitting up while her siblings snoozed lying down.
Meanwhile, Jennifer’s resident cats, Bodie and Bear, heard the commotion from the nursery and couldn’t wait to meet the new arrivals.

Hickory became the most affectionate of the bunch, greeting Jennifer every time she walked into the room. He nuzzled her until the petting started, then dissolved into a pool of purrs.
When the kittens were healthy enough to meet the resident cats, Hickory was the first to approach Bodie and brush up against his soft fur.

Sassafras and Linden also went to the house cats and followed them around, fascinated by their presence. “I can’t believe how brave Linden has become. Rowan and Willow are still on the fence, but I’m sure they’ll love them in no time.”
“The kittens love to run, climb, chase each other and play with toys.”

Bear and Body appear Each time the kittens follow them, fascinated by their every move. They have started playing with the cats and even playfully stroke their tails.
Hickory constantly tries to catch their attention in hopes of a grooming session from the cats. His siblings follow along, eager to see and imitate everything the kitties do.

The five love indoor life, with good food, cozy beds and plenty of toys to keep them entertained.
Sassafras continues to be the leader, always inciting antics in the room. The once shy kittens have transformed into playful bundles of energy and loving love bugs.

With Bodie and Bear’s help, the kittens have grown enormously in confidence. They live each day to the fullest, excited for the adventures that lie ahead.
