Macabre discovery in a house: dozens of animals trying to survive in the dark and excrement, kittens kept in the freezer

Dead cats, kittens kept in a freezer, other pets living in the dark and excrement were found in a house in Territoire-de-Belfort.

About thirty abused pets were found in a house in Territoire de Belfort, along with twenty dead cats, including 14 kittens kept in a freezer, the prosecutor’s office said Thursday, July 18, 2024.

The owner of the animals, who lived with them, was presented to the prosecution on Thursday after she was in police custody and placed under judicial supervision pending her trial on October 24 for “possession of animal carcasses without a permit”. “placing a domestic animal in a habitat that may cause suffering” and “cruelty to animals”, state prosecutor Jessica Vonderscher told AFP.

In great social isolation

This 52-year-old lady, who lived in great social isolation, faces three years in prison and a fine of €45,000. His companion will be summoned to court on the same date.

The gendarmerie intervened on Monday 15 July at his home, in the town of Chaux, after being notified by the SPA (Society for the Protection of Animals), alerted by the family of the occupant of the premises.

The soldiers entered a completely unsanitary house where 22 cats, seven dogs and four mandarin birds were trying to survive in a terrible state of health.

In the midst of excrement, garbage cans and garbage cans

“The lady let them live and eat in total darkness and they lived among excrement, rubbish bins and rubbish bins,” Ms Vonderscher said.

“They apparently had enough to eat, but they were not cared for, they were sick and injured, sometimes unable to feed themselves, with serious psychological problems,” she added, lamenting the “mistreatment intolerable”. The animals were cared for by SPA.

Fourteen dead kittens were found in the freezer and six adult cat carcasses were in the basement. Regarding the preserved feline remains, the resident of the premises explained to investigators “that she wanted them,” according to the judge.
