More animals left behind in Quebec since the beginning of the year

As July 1 approaches, the premises of the Society for the Protection of Animals of Quebec are full. Many owners have abandoned their pets during this moving period.

The Director General of the Society for the Protection of Animals of Quebec (SPA), Karina Painchaud, noticed an increase in the number of abandonments. In fact, their numbers rose from 1,534 for the period from January to June last year to 1,559 this year.

The Director General of SPA de Québec specifies, however, that if the number of decommissionings increased this year compared to last year, the number of decommissionings that occur due to the relocation of owners has decreased. In the same period, from January to June, their number fell from 139 to 93. According to her, one of the reasons for this situation is the fact that pet owners may have decided to stay in their homes rather than move.

Another explanation she hears from owners for leaving their animals behind is the lack of time to care for them, especially during the summer period, when there are many activities and leisure activities.
