In recent weeks there has been a new sushi restaurant in Westfield Part-Dieu. You know, at CityCrunch we prefer small neighborhood bistros to malls, but the Sushi Way concept is worth talking to you about.
We didn’t come for that. We just wanted a snack before our session at UGC Ciné Cité. And then, while strolling through the food floor of the mall, our curiosity was piqued by this rather… futuristic looking restaurant. Fascinated, we allow ourselves to be captured by our curiosity and by the place.
Sushi on rails…literally
When you first sit down, you quickly realize that Sushi Way is far from a classic restaurant. The decor mixes a futuristic and Tokyo look in a refined style and a few well-placed traditional touches. But the most exciting thing is still these rails that border each table. Each of them is equipped with a small tablet for placing orders. Here, everything takes place without human contact (or almost).
Although the service is fully automated, there are many people working behind the stove. We have a direct view of the sushi chefs preparing the orders with surgical precision.
The concept is simple: you choose your sushi on the tablet, you confirm, and a few minutes later a tray arrives on a rail to bring us our order. Wasabi on maki, a cute little voice, a little robotic, announces that “your dish has arrived, enjoy your meal!” “. Charming … or creepy! You can recommend as much as you want, and an essential detail, there is even a small water tap at each table. No more begging the waiter to refill our glasses!
A futuristic canteen and direct view of the kitchen
We ordered classics: makis, californias and sushi, all made with salmon. At first bite we are pleasantly surprised. It is fresh, the salmon melts in your mouth and the rice is perfect, creamy without being too sweet. Of course, there is nothing revolutionary or incredibly wonderful, but it has everything you can expect from a good sushi. For dessert we shared an ice cream sesame maki, ideal to add a sweet and refreshing touch to finish the meal as it should be.
The check, please
The continental plates parade in an almost hypnotic ballet from one table to the other. It’s time for us to leave for our film session. To pay, human contact is left as you have to go to the cash register to pay the dues. It would have been cool to pay directly at your table (with a siren that goes off if you leave without paying!).
The lunch menu with 6 salmon maki, 6 salmon avocado California, 2 salmon sushi and 1 coleslaw costs €10.80. The frozen mochi was €2.90. In the end, for two people, this meal cost us €24.70. Super cheap for sushi AND for a mall. We can’t get enough of a movie!
Judgment
We liked:
- The futuristic and original concept
- Direct view to the kitchen
- Service speed
- Low prices
We liked less:
- The noise
- Despite a nice decor, the place remains quite cold
In the end, Sushi Way pleasantly surprised us. The concept is fun, it’s a change from other downtown restaurants. The sushi is good (nothing amazing, but more than adequate for a mall restaurant), and above all, it’s pretty quick and cheap. Handy when you’re in a rush before a movie! So if you are looking for an original place to have a bite to eat before a movie, Sushi Way is a very good alternative.
