Volunteers from the Animal Cross association in Pau recovered more than 80 animals from a private property near Orthez on 20 June. The intervention, led by the Departmental Directorate for Population Protection (DDPP), involved 38 dogs, 15 cats and 30 chickens with the support of about ten gendarmes from the Mourenx territorial brigade.

A veterinarian was brought in to examine the animals, who lived in undignified conditions – in cages, cars, tied to short chains, etc. – and presented an alarming general condition. The list of care that must be given to them is long.

Volunteers are looking for temporary host families and have launched an online fundraiser.

“Four dogs have mammary tumors, they need surgery,” reports Valérie Thomé, vice president of Animal Cross. Yesterday, a kangal (1) had a huge vaginitis: he had to be taken to the vet. She was no longer eating at all. In addition, a dog has entropions in both eyes (inward rolling of the eyelid, editor’s note). A dog is in a veterinary clinic […] for she has deep wounds and has lost much blood.”

“Cats don’t necessarily have major health problems,” continues Valérie Thomé. On the other hand, they have not developed normally: they are too small. It’s the same for dogs. And the chickens were in a disastrous state of health: they never went outside, had big claws and all had mange. “The collective, which is often called out for abuse, rarely sees such extreme cases.

More than 20 dogs to accommodate

If the cats and chickens quickly found families to take them in, this is so far only the case for about fifteen dogs. Animal Cross is therefore launching an appeal (2). This involves temporarily housing an animal, as the ongoing investigation prevents, at the moment, long-term adoptions. An online prize pool has also been launched on HelloAsso to pay for all costs associated with the rescue.

“We received a lot of food and equipment: we filled up. What we lack are host families and money,” sums up the deputy chairman, who also invites interested parties to become volunteers.

Complaint, investigation and free number

Animal Cross filed a complaint and a police investigation was opened. “It’s about establishing the level of animal cruelty – about which there is no debate -,” explains Commander Rémi Galhié of the Orthez Gendarmerie. And to check if there are other violations. “Pet Shop? Hidden work? It is too early to know. After 24 hours in custody, the accused was released under judicial supervision. “If we witness animal cruelty, we can call a new free number: 36 77,” says Rémi Galhié. In service for a few days, the platform allows you to approach the right people (police, town halls, associations, etc.).
