Abandoned animals increase in summer. In Doubs, the association Nala, Mystic et Compagnie is responsible for collecting the small balls of hair. But its possibilities are limited. The 16 host families are overwhelmed. Faced with the increasing number of cats on the street, the association is looking for new families.
Every summer the number of abandoned animals increases. last summer, more than 16,000 cats, dogs, ferrets, rabbits and birds have been abandoned by their owners. It is palmost as much as the summer of 2022, which already marked a sad record compared to 2021.
In Thise, in Doubs, the association Nala, Mystic et Compagnie, born in 2019, takes responsible for injured, abandoned or stray cats. Recently, she collected eight kittens from streets, basements and even attics.
Vivi, Velcro, Verlaine… The little survivors are housed in a dedicated room, in quarantine, during a health check.
“We can have very young kittens, not even two months old yet, who come full of chorizo, in the eyes, the nose, even sometimes the mouth, which is purulent, or cats covered in fleas, with tics, which are no more than skin and bones. At first they will go to a vet for first aid and then it will be care several times a day.” explains Guillaume, volunteer host family, to the microphone of our journalists Sophie Bourgeot and Lilia Aoudia.
This is what foster care is all about: caring, socializing, giving time and not just drinking while waiting for the holy grail from the adoptive family.
And faced with the demand, the association’s 16 host families are overwhelmed. Especially since there are no more seasons. “With climate change, mothers are pregnant from January 1 to December 31. There is no longer this winter holiday, because there are no more winters, no bitter cold. A female can be pregnant two to 10 times a year. emphasizes the president of the Nala, Mystic et Compagnie association, Frédérique Duvivier. The association is constantly looking to welcome new families more and more abandoned cats.
35 cats welcomed, 300 others outside, as many mouths to feed, individuals to sterilize. And more than €30,000 a year in veterinary expenses, which are completely covered by the association, which lives only on donations.
“We must stop resting everything on associations, everyone must take their responsibility. The association’s motto is “Let us be responsible”. The main culprits are cat owners. Identify, sterilize, vaccinate, the problem will be much less.” assures the association’s chairman.
Getting the cats back on their feet, Guillaume ended up adopting a few. A drop in the ocean for the association, which continues to recruit hosts or adopters.
The association Nala, Mystic & Compagnie will be present to present its activities to animal welfare day organized on October 5 by the city of Besançon. The possibility may be to convince new host families.
