When Juniper the cat arrived at Best Friends Felines (a cat rescue group), she wasn’t alone. Her mother and sister came along, but this time it was she who was pregnant.
She participated in the rescue’s Last Litter Program, which aims to break the cycle of unwanted litters through sterilization. This program gives cats like Juniper a chance at a healthier, happier life and ensures their kittens find loving homes.
Once Juniper settled into her foster home, everything went smoothly until a few days later.

The mom-to-be was affectionate from the start, chirping at her foster carer, Jen, and snuggling into her arms. “She’s a talkative, vocal girl with a lot to say and her purr is the size of a motorboat,” best friends told Felines.
“She loves snuggles and already has everyone swooning over her amazing multi-coloured coat.”

A few days in foster care, she went into labor and gave birth to two little ginger kittens before Exhausted, she needed help cleaning the other baby. “But then everything stopped.”
A few hours later, the cat family was rushed to the vet when Juniper had trouble delivering the remaining kittens.

That afternoon they decided an emergency C-section was necessary to save the lives of both the kittens and their mother. “The good news is that we were welcomed with two more little babies and Juniper recovered quickly from surgery.”
Despite a concerted effort, the two newcomers could not latch, but with quick supplementary feedings they perked up.

When they were returned to Juniper, all four kittens nursed happily side by side. The next day the cat family was making a wonderful recovery.
The kittens – two ginger (boys), one tom (boy) and one dark calico (girl) – began to gain weight and energy. “They are named after types of juniper: Skyrocket, Blue Arrow, Spartan and Taylor.”

At 11 days old, the kittens have doubled in size and developed full bellies. The two ginger kittens (Skyrocket and Blue Arrow) are almost identical, with equal weight and matching markings.
“They are both very calm boys, with Blue Arrow being the first to open his little eyes on day eight.”

“The other two are the life of the party. Spartan (blank) loves to scream his people’s song every time he’s taken over for a weigh-in – he lives for drama. Taylor also likes to be a little dramatic, but that comes with being a calico.” “
Juniper has begun to take short breaks from her kittens, soaking up affection from her foster carer before returning to her brood.

“Despite being a bit clueless about motherhood at first, she is a wonderfully devoted mother.”
The kittens are blossoming into beautiful bundles of joy, moving around the nest and strengthening their legs. Soon they will explore with open eyes and keep their mother on her toes.
