The very first iPhone in history has been sold at auction in the United States, 15 years after its release

Currently, Apple is actively preparing the launch of its next range of iPhone which is called iPhone 14. The bitten apple brand has planned a special event which will take place on September 7th.

Steve Jobs introducing the first iPhone

While waiting for the arrival of the iPhone 14, it was the ancestor of Apple’s next flagship smartphone that attracted all the attention during an auction organized in the United States. It is more precisely a first generation iPhone which was finally awarded for an estimated sum of 350,500 dollars.

A first-generation iPhone and iPod were sold for a lot

The auctions in question were organized by RR Auction, which therefore sold the original iPhone to the highest bidder for an amount of around 350,500 dollars or 350,550 euros. This while at its release, the 4 GB variant of the iPhone was sold at 499 dollars against 599 dollars for the 8 GB variant.

The iPhone that was sold unopened was launched in June 2007 in the United States by Steve Jobs himself. It is equipped with a 2 megapixel camera and a visual voicemail function. The device also has a touch interface, an MP3 player, a web browser and a storage capacity of up to 8 GB. Features that are derisory compared to the options currently available on smartphones.

Two other products that have marked the history of Apple were also auctioned during the event. The first is an original printed circuit board from the Apple I computer. Its particularity is that it was soldered by hand by Stephen Wozniak, the co-founder of Apple. It was sold for the sum of 67,700 dollars, or approximately 250,450 euros.

The second product is the first iPod in history. Launched in 2001, the digital music player from Apple managed to leave for a sum of 350,500 dollars, or 350,550 euros.

The iPhone, a device that changed the course of history

If the iPhone auctioned by RR Auction was able to sell for such a sum it is not for nothing. Apple’s first-generation laptop succeeded in setting the standard for what would become known as smartphones in the following decade.

It should also be noted that with its new gadget, Apple managed to gain the upper hand in a market dominated at the time by Nokia and BlackBerry. Over fifteen years, the Cupertino company has managed to capitalize on its innovation to position itself as one of the biggest sellers of telephones in the world.

However, the unopened iPhone auctioned failed to break a record. In the category of rare and unopened gadgets, the prize goes to a cartridge of the game Super Mario 64. This last unopened and completely blank was auctioned by the auction house Heritage Auctions in July 2021. It was finally sold at $1.156 million.

Super Mario 64 is an iconic Nintendo game that stood out for its higher graphics and video quality compared to previous games.
