They helped a kitten bounce back from a rough start. Now he thinks he can do anything.

Pouffouff, the kitten, was born from one of the cats rescued from a farm. He was the only survivor of his litter and had an amazing will to live.

A few months ago, while working in a neighborhood, Samuel came across a small colony of hungry, abandoned cats in a yard (some were pregnant). He provided them with food and water and could not leave them to fend for themselves.

When no one came to help, he decided to do it himself. He rented a humane trap and returned with a bag of food to secure them all.

Chatons Orphelins Montreal, a cat rescue, stepped up and arranged foster homes for several cats and their kittens. Samuel set up a room for the remaining cats while seeking help from other rescues.

One morning a pregnant cat in his care went into labour, and Pouffouff was the only surviving kitten from the litter.

Despite having his mother all to himself, the kitten remained small for his age. When he started showing some neurological signs, Samuel reached out to Chatons Orphelins Montreal for help.

A volunteer quickly made the trip to pick up the kitten and brought him to Montreal after a few hours on the road. “He was very underweight, weighing less than 700 grams and you could feel his spine,” said Celine of Chatons Orphelins Montreal.

“He had slight tremors when he arrived. His foster family helped him eat as he struggled to gain weight. Although he was frail and developmentally delayed, he was determined to live.”

Twenty-four hours later, one of his pupils was dilated. “We immediately took him to the clinic. The vet found that he had Horner’s syndrome (a neurological condition that affects the eye and the surrounding area), an ear infection and possibly toxoplasmosis.”

Shortly after starting treatment, he began to turn around and his energy level increased. “He recovered quickly and brought so much joy to his foster family and everyone involved in his rescue.”

Once he had regained his strength, his mischievous personality emerged. Zooming around like an energizer bunny, he playfully explored and probed every nook and cranny.

Pouffouff tried fresh water from his new fountain, fascinated by everything around him. He followed his people everywhere, curious to know their every move.

After a few weeks of excellent care and nutritious food, the little warrior kitten settled down. “His dilated pupil has returned to normal and his head is much less tilted. He is now gaining weight every day.”

When Pouffouff was introduced to other cats, he was determined to be the boss. He eagerly played with cats much bigger than him and fought with all his might and proved to be a true champion.

“He’s not afraid of anything, not even the vacuum cleaner.”

Most cats flee at the sight of a vacuum, but not Pouffouff. As soon as he spots the vacuum cleaner, he chases and pounces on it as if it were his prey.

The fearless kitten shows everyone he’s a force to be reckoned with, dashing around with reckless abandon and never letting anything slow him down.

Thanks to the compassionate rescuer and volunteers, Pouffsouff and the cats from the farm have been given a second chance at life.

He is now having the time of his life in his foster home and is enjoying the holiday season surrounded by loving people and feline friends.
