Two kittens that once hid outside now claim every lap indoors, especially curious when they notice another cat

Once hiding outside, these two kittens now claim every lap indoors, especially curious when they notice another cat.

Last month, a good Samaritan found two tiny kittens huddled in the bushes near the Homeward Bound Cats rescue center.

“We don’t know what happened or why, but someone saw them and brought them in. It’s unlikely they got there on their own,” Homeward Bound Cat told us.

Despite the ordeal, the kittens quickly turned into spinning machines. “Both were quite thin and small, but they were cute and killed themselves with a bang.”

The gray kitten, Toffee Twix, had a kitten cold and an eye infection, and her calico sister, Caramel Swirl, never left her side. Around 6-7 weeks old they were very underweight, but with good food and warm beds they could finally sleep peacefully with full bellies.

After a few days in foster care, Toffee’s eye cleared and she began exploring her new digs, climbing on top of her foster mother, Ellen Richter, for attention.

Caramel, the bigger of the two, made himself at home. She adored her sister’s company, but as soon as Ellen entered the room, she sprinted for affection. “All they want to do is snuggle and cuddle. They’re so sweet and loving,” Ellen shared.

Toffee stayed small for the first week, nibbling on food and only gaining 1-2 ounces.

To help whet their appetites, Ellen offered a variety of foods with different textures and tastes until she found their favorites. “It’s been a struggle to find the right foods. (After weeks of searching) we finally found ones they liked.”

Caramel encouraged Toffee to play and showered her with snuggles as if she could tell Toffee needed extra TLC.

Ellen introduced them to various new toys, but it was the quill wand that really captivated Caramel. She jumped on it, grabbed it in her mouth and gave a low, playful growl as Ellen tugged at the other end.

When they were eight weeks old, they moved into a foster room with plenty of room to zoom around, scale cat furniture and a tunnel perfect for jumping in and out of.

Caramel was overjoyed at his newfound freedom and tore through the place like a small tornado.

The commotion of the kittens quickly caught the attention of Matisse, the friendly and happy cat. He strolled in and quickly got comfortable around the little newcomers.

He towers over them, but is still a kitten at heart, racing through the tunnel and luring the kittens to play.

He is a gentle giant who lets the kittens wrestle with their tails and pounce on him from behind. Caramel is especially attracted to Matisse, who follows him around like a shadow. She’s happy to have a big buddy to show her the ropes and is fascinated by his playful spirit.

Toffee prefers to sit on her foster mother’s lap and quietly observe the two as they chase each other. Matisse sometimes pauses mid-game to give Toffee gentle nose kisses.

When Caramel hit the two-pound milestone, Toffee was still playing catch-up. With the right food, she finally thrived and grew stronger with each passing day.

Last week, Ellen celebrated when Toffee finally tipped the scales at two pounds, ready for her next exciting chapter.

“These kittens are very quiet and calm. They are energetic, but in a soft way. Most of the time they want to be in my lap, held and petted, or climb on my shoulders. Caramel has more energy than Toffee.”

After a rough start, the kittens thrive as a bonded couple. All they’ve ever wanted is a warm lap to curl up in and a home filled with endless hugs and love.
