22 arrests after pro-Palestinian activists stormed a museum
At least 22 people were arrested after pro-Palestinian activists stormed a New York museum on Friday, causing damage, police said Saturday.
Hundreds of protesters had blocked access to the Brooklyn Museum by shouting pro-Palestinian slogans and waving signs, an AFP correspondent noted on Friday.
Some had entered the establishment to hang a banner on the facade proclaiming “Free Palestine, Stop the Genocide”. “Unfortunately, damage was done and members of our staff were attacked,” a museum spokesman said. The US, especially campuses, has been rocked for months by demonstrations against Israel’s offensive in Gaza.
Across the United States, law enforcement officers were encouraged by university administrations to break down camps and forcibly evict protesters. In particular, students call on the universities to sever ties with patrons or companies linked to Israel.
The war was sparked on October 7 by an unprecedented attack by Hamas commandos infiltrated from Gaza into southern Israel, resulting in the massacre of at least 1,160 people, most of them civilians, according to a count by AFP established from official Israeli sources.
At least 35,000 died in Gaza
According to Israel, around 250 people have been kidnapped and 130 of them are still hostages in Gaza, of whom 33 are believed to be dead. In retaliation, Israel vowed to wipe out the Islamist movement, which has been in power in Gaza since 2007 and which it considers a terrorist organization, along with the United States and the European Union.
His army launched a massive air campaign, followed on 27 October by a ground offensive that enabled it to advance from north to south of the small coastal area, costing 250 soldiers their lives.
Israeli military operations have so far killed 36,379 people in Gaza, most of them civilians, according to Hamas’ health ministry.
