“We were elected on an ecological and animalist program, but it is vague”, explains Francis Feytout, municipal councilor delegated for the respect of the living and the animal condition. “What do the people of Bordeaux want? We have solutions but we cannot apply everything right away. Hence this neutral questionnaire, dissociating in particular the answers of owners and non-owners of dogs.
First lesson: Bordeaux residents are largely concerned about animal welfare, considering it important or very important at 77%. A figure that delights the chosen one. More than 81% are thus in favor of the return of insects and 87% say they are ready to install a shelter promoting biodiversity (tit, hedgehog, ladybug, etc.).
Pigeons map
The pigeon is only slightly considered a nuisance (27.8%) but more as a tolerated, even appreciated neighbour. Enough to justify the moratorium which put an end to lethal captures in October 2021. “A pigeon plan has been in place since this summer. We identify nuisance sites where plastic spikes cannot be installed, such as at the opera, and want to test scarers. »
“Urban space cannot be sanitized. The sewers would be constantly clogged if the rats didn’t eat the clumps of fat.”
A vast communication campaign is also planned to stop feeding, which more than 43% of respondents frequently or occasionally indulge in. A practice that promotes overpopulation (Bordeaux is said to be home to 5,000 pigeons), and reduces the ingestion of waste by pigeons, which they indulge in more willingly when they only have that to put in their beaks.
Bag terminals
The incivilities related to dogs are more delicate to approach, estimates the elected official, since they would be attributable not to the animal but to the man. If cohabitation is generally appreciated – both on the street and in parks, a little less on public transport – it is up to owners to keep their pets on a leash and to guarantee the cleanliness of the sidewalks.
It is thus 78% of non-owners of dogs who believe that droppings are not picked up enough. Could the solution come from installing more bag terminals? “No, replies Francis Feytout. This relieves the owners of responsibility. In Lyon, they are even withdrawn. At the same time, owners are asking for more spaces where their animals are allowed.
