Several heavyweights of international courts have abandoned the Kremlin and other Russian clients.

The oligarch could only see this: “British lawyers no longer want to work for the Russians.” Piotr Aven, a Russian billionaire placed under Western sanctions, wishes to challenge them in court. But he struggles to find advice, he tells the FinancialTimes. As with all Western companies, pressure is increasing on lawyers who defend Russian interests. The major business firms that had offices in Moscow have announced their withdrawal from Russia in recent weeks, as have McDonald’s, Ikea and more recently the French Renault. This is the case of the Anglo-Saxon Linklaters, Allen & Overy or Baker McKenzie, of which Christine Lagarde was once the director.

More particular is the situation of lawyers who have – or had until recently – the Russian state as a client. This is the case for disputes brought before international arbitration tribunals opposing, for example, Ukrainian companies to the Kremlin after the annexation…
