Biden announces he’s back in the race for the White House, Harris drinks a cold beer on TV, two of her supporters launch a line of nail polish in support of her, and Trump strokes her blonde mane.
Here are some unusual campaign highlights, compiled weekly by AFP until November 5, the day of the US presidential election.
– “I’m back” –
Joe Biden made a small surprise appearance in the White House press room. “My name is Joe Biden,” he cheerfully told reporters.
He then described his recent political successes: positive report on employment and the end of the dockers’ strike.
All smiles, the president then headed for the exit amid a barrage of questions. “Have you ever considered reconsidering your decision to leave the race?” asked a journalist.
Theatrically, Joe Biden turned around and dropped a bombshell: “I’m back.” General laughter. And a little wink after the joke.
– Cold beer –
During a TV show, the famous host Stephen Colbert and the presidential candidate drank a Miller High Life, a very popular American beer.
“Chin,” the Democrat said as she opened the lid of the can. A sip, followed by an approving nod: “The beer’s champagne!”.
“The last time I had a beer was at a baseball game with Doug,” Emhoff, her husband, added to the Democrat.
And just like alcohol loosens tongues, when asked “Did Trump lose the 2020 election?” Harris scathingly replied: “When you lose so many jobs, when you lose (industrial) production), when you lose the auto factories, when you lose so many jobs, when you lose (industrial) production, lose the election, what makes you a loser?
– Trump the handsome guy –
Donald Trump recalled with nostalgia his two sports cars, Pontiac GTOs.
“I had this GTO, I thought I was the hottest guy around, it was crazy,” Trump recalled at a rally in Detroit reliving his youth.
“It was something. I opened the roof. You see, back then I didn’t mind my hair flying around.”
The audience burst into laughter and the former president, in the middle of a one-man show, stroked his scalp and said: “Today I’m more careful.”
– Harris well varnished –
In a colorful campaign, two followers of Kamala Harris decided to play it and turn it into nail polish.
“We wanted something playful and fun, something accessible,” says Amy Rosenthal, co-founder of “Colors for Kamala.” Each color is thus associated with messages linked to the campaign.
Red, the color of the Republican Party, bears the inscription “cat ladies”, to mock remarks made by Donald Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, who used the term to mock people who choose to live without a partner and/or childless.
Orange for “impeachment,” a reminder of the Democrat’s career in California.
The neutral shades are dedicated to Donald Trump’s favorite insults to describe the Democrat: “Bitch”, “mean”, “did you hear her laugh?”. A way to ridicule these insults and “neutralize” them, according to the two creators of these political nail polishes.
– Trump does not want an F-15 –
Donald Trump’s campaign team has called for increased protection for the former president.
The request includes military assets, including aircraft and vehicles used to protect sitting presidents.
Joe Biden asked for “everything he needs” as Trump was hit by two assassination attempts during the election campaign.
Well, everything, but not quite: “As long as he doesn’t ask for (fighter) F-15s,” the president said.
