Bouches-du-Rhône, Pyrénées-Orientales and Seine-Saint-Denis are the departments where acts of vandalism are most numerous, according to the trade union SRA. Departments where the prices of repairs are also the highest.
According to a study carried out by the association SRA (Safety and car repair), there is a clear correlation between the number of acts of vandalism and the cost of car repairs.
To derive this observation, the association conducted two rankings. The departments are ranked according to the highest frequency of damages for vandalism. The second classifies them according to the main repair cost indices after a vandalism.

Verdict: Three departments that appear in the top 5 in one of these unflattering rankings are also in the other. They are Bouches-du-Rhône (13), Pyrénées-Orientales (66) and Seine-Saint-Denis (93).
Bouches-du-Rhône even wins the prize for the department with the highest frequency of damage for vandalism, with a rate of 4.08% against 1.15% for the national average. And also the highest index of car repair costs: 205.17 against 120.71 in Rhône (69), a tenth of this ranking.
In these departments, these numerous claims of vandalism, combined with higher than average repair prices, drive up insurance companies’ valuations. A cost that they transfer to the car insurance premiums that the insured pays.
Higher car insurance premiums in PACA and Ile-de-France
In fact, the average annual car insurance contract costs 698 euros and 745 euros respectively in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Ile-de-France regions, according to the comparator Assurland.com. While the price of the car insurance premium in the whole French territory amounts to an average of 630 euros per year.
“The regions of Corsica, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Ile-de-France are regulars on the podium”, notes Samuel Bansard, spokesman for Meilleurtaux Assurances. This is undoubtedly due to the fact that these are regions where the frequency of damage due to vandalism is the highest.
These are mainly explained by “heavier traffic” as well as a “parking offer mainly concentrated on public roads”, analyzes Samuel Bansard. A statement shared by the SRA association, for which vandalism is more frequent in “the most urbanized areas where crime is strongest”.
On the other hand, it is in Brittany that the insured do best. The average price of the car insurance premium is “only” 491 euros per year, according to Assurland. Not surprisingly, this is a region where vandalism is rare. There are therefore large differences in the amount of the insurance premium paid by individuals, depending on the region where they live. Disparities that can reach 44% for an identical profile, according to a study by the broker Meilleurtaux.
