Claude Guéant imprisoned: his lawyer assures that he has paid all of his debt

Have these last days spent behind the bars of the prison of Health played the role of accelerator? According to Claude Gueant’s lawyer Philippe Bouchez El Ghozi, the former minister under Nicolas Sarkozy settled last Thursday all of the debt he owed to the Treasury, thanks to loans granted by relatives. A seizure of 3000 euros was deducted each month from his pension of around 5500 euros, an insufficient sum in the eyes of justice.

AFP, which was able to have access to a slip, indicates that Claude Guéant paid Thursday 292,000 euros, including 133,315.95 euros which corresponded to the rest of his debt to the Treasury. The rest of the sum is equivalent to the debt of another of the defendants convicted in the same case, that of cash bonuses, because this debt is joint and several.

Monday, Claude Guéant, who will celebrate his 77th birthday next month, was imprisoned in the prison of Health within the framework of a warrant of deposit. He had been summoned a little earlier in the day before the sentence execution service of the Paris prosecutor’s office. While after his conviction in 2017 in the case of cash bonuses (two years’ imprisonment, one of which was suspended and put on probation), the former secretary general of the Élysée under Nicolas Sarkozy was to benefit of a sentence adjustment, the sentence enforcement chamber finally confirmed the partial revocation of his six-month conditional release and his partial three-month reprieve.

A request for release

The latter felt that the former secretary general of the Elysée under Nicolas Sarkozy did not reimburse his due quickly enough. According to his lawyer, Claude Guéant would therefore have moved heaven and earth for three days to collect the required sum. Me Bouchez El Ghozi assures the Parisian that in the process, Thursday, a request for adjustment of sentence was presented to the judge on the grounds that the cause of his incarceration would have disappeared. But, still according to the defender, no hearing has yet been set. “What was true to incarcerate him must also be true to get him out of prison immediately. I would not understand, moreover, that we decided to imprison him extremely quickly and that we decided to keep him in prison or to leave him for a certain time, when nothing today justifies this situation, “said he commented this Sunday noon on Europe 1. He said he hoped “to allow him to spend the Christmas holidays with his family”.

During his conviction, Claude Guéant, suspected of having dipped into an envelope intended for the costs of investigation and surveillance (FES) of the police, had also been fined 75,000 euros and banned from practicing. any public service for five years. His sentence became final in 2019, after the rejection of his cassation appeal. Between 2002 and 2004, when he was chief of staff to Nicolas Sarkozy, Minister of the Interior, the enarque paid himself 5,000 euros each month, an amount in addition to a salary of 8,000 euros and compensation of 2,200 euros.
