Negotiations between the United States and Taiwan for a trade agreement will officially take place in the fall. This is a new stage in the strengthening of their relations, against a backdrop of very strong tensions with China.
The United States and Taiwan will begin formal negotiations for a trade and investment agreement this fall, the office of US Trade Representative Katherine Tai said Wednesday, August 17. These discussions are part of an initiative announced in June, which has already given rise to a first meeting the same month.
The talks will also focus on responses to “market-unfriendly policies and methods”, the office said, which could be interpreted as a reference to China.
Getting closer despite the tensions
The formal launch of these new talks is further evidence of the United States’ desire to get closer to Taiwan, which is already an important trading partner.
