Former partner of Jacques Vergès and defender of the serial killer Guy Georges, Me Alex Ursulet had Mr. Thibault Laforcade quoted for an article published on the website of the newspaper Le Parisien on June 24, 2020. Counsel for the complainant declared that the choice by the examining magistrate to then place the Martinican lawyer under the status of assisted witness was “surprising to say the least, given the elements of the file and the lies of Mr. Ursulet”.

The latter considered himself defamed by the term “lies”, but the court considered that the offending remarks were not defamatory and therefore dismissed Alex Ursulet. In the ongoing judicial investigation on the merits of the case, the Martiniquais has seen his status as an assisted witness evolve: he was indicted in December 2021 for “rape by person in authority” and placed under judicial supervision.

The 64-year-old lawyer, former RPR regional adviser in Martinique, is accused of rape by a young lawyer who was just over 20 years old at the time of the events, which allegedly occurred in January 2018. The latter was then doing an internship in the Paris office of Alex Ursulet, as part of his training. He, for his part, lodged a complaint for “slanderous denunciation”but also for “fake” and “attempted fraud in judgment”. He was struck off the Paris Bar at the end of December 2019 by the Council of the Order, before appealing this decision, which allowed him to continue to practice. The Paris Court of Appeal decided on April 24, 2022 to await the outcome of the criminal proceedings for rape targeting the West Indian lawyer, before deciding on his disbarment from the bar.
