Nanterre: a man sentenced to 18 months in prison for having slaughtered his dog

Acts of rare violence on a dog were judged this Friday, October 14, 2022 at the court of Nanterre in the Hauts-de-Seine. A man appeared in court on charges of severe abuse and cruelty on an animal. The defendant had cut the throat of his dog. He was sentenced to a term of 18 months in prison, 12 of which are suspended, carried out under the semi-freedom regime.

Permanent ban on having an animal

In addition to the prison sentence, the man was sentenced to a permanent ban on owning an animal. It is also prohibited to exercise a profession related to animals for a period of five years.

A revealing camera

The facts go back a few weeks. The police discovered the body of a dog with the traces of multiple wounds made with a knife. The investigators then went back to the defendant.

According to the foundation’s lawyer 30 million friendsa civil party in this case, it is a camera present at the individual’s home that would have made it possible to demonstrate his guilt.

Unknown to police

“He literally went wild on the animal. In addition to slitting his throat, he gave him multiple stab wounds, ”said Me Caroline Lanty. The defendant was not known to the police, but had previously committed violence against other animals.

During the hearing, the public prosecutor asked for a sentence of 20 months in prison against the defendant, five of which were suspended. For this type of offence, the maximum penalty incurred is five years’ imprisonment as well as a fine of 75,000 euros.
