EXCLUSIVE MAINTENANCE – The conflict in Ukraine is fueling the island’s determination, explains Joseph Wu, Taiwan’s foreign minister, during a meeting with Le Figaro in Taipei.

LE FIGARO. – What is the meaning of the Ukrainian flag flying in this room?

Joseph Wu. – This flag was given to me by Ukrainian NGOs, it is signed by frontline fighters. Next to it you can see boxing gloves sent by the mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, thanks to the donations of the Taiwanese for the reconstruction of the city. They mean that the fighting spirit of the Ukrainians is passed on to the Taiwanese.

Is the war in Ukraine a warning sign for Taiwan?

These atrocities committed by an authoritarian state against a democracy, it could happen in Taiwan. These images affect our population. That is why we condemned Russian behavior, imposed sanctions and helped Ukraine. Taiwanese have seen the courage of Ukrainians fighting for their sovereignty and freedom. It is a great source of inspiration. We have seen how they manage to repel the aggression of one of the most impressive armies in the world…
