New episode of our consumer test series. As a reminder, every week we test products on sale in the six supermarket chains (Delhaize, Colruyt, Aldi, Lidl, Intermarché and Carrefour) by comparing the big brands with “white goods” or distributor brands. The final score for each product is out of twenty points: 2.5 points for the appearance of the packaging, the appearance of the product, the nutritional value and the readability of the label, and 5 points for the taste and quality ratio. This week we tested Cornetto ice cream and their replicas.
Appearance of the packaging: for the big brand, there is apparently only one, so much so that its name has become a generic term to talk about this type of ice cream. The packaging with its blue background is of course familiar and easy to recognize, and it is not for nothing that all the brands use the same color code, except Intermarché (and it is successful) and Carrefour (and it is less…). We really liked the packs from Lidl (a good copy) and Delhaize (sky blue but much more original), and much less Aldi and Colruyt, which could use some dusting.
Appearance of the product: All in all, nothing looks more like a Cornetto than a copy! Little thing to know though, the big brand uses a “Latte fresco” ice cream, so a cream ice cream, while the others offer vanilla ice cream. It’s different visually and obviously flavorful (see below).
Nutritional value : Nutri-Score D for all except Lidl, which received an E.
Label readability: at Aldi, Delhaize, Colruyt and Cornetto it was very clear. At Carrefour, it was written sufficiently large, but there were many consecutive texts. However, it was too small at Lidl and badly placed at Intermarché.
The big brand test: For an aperitif, here is the best cubed gouda to put on the table (COMPARISON)
Taste: we start with Aldi. It was very, very sweet, and you could hardly taste the vanilla ice cream. The cornet was okay but the whole thing was really average. It was even worse at Carrefour, the ice cream was really industrial. For Lidl, it was already much better, especially in terms of ice cream, and the cone was at the same level. It’s just as good as it was two years ago. Regarding the Intermarché, we were pleasantly surprised, with a mixture of ice cream and vanilla ice cream, with a very good cone. Delhaize was also good, but a little below the same. The Colruyt product was not bad, but still very bland. Quite disappointing… For the big brand, the taste was finally completely unique. It’s not vanilla ice cream, but ice cream. Some prefer this, others prefer vanilla ice cream.
The big brand test: here’s the relaxing white wine to enjoy yourself without breaking the bank (COMPARISON)
Value for money: Aldi saves the day thanks to its attractive price: €1.49 for 8 cones. For the rest, here are the prices in order: Cornetto (€5.99 for 6!), Intermarché, Delhaize, Carrefour and Colruyt (€1.99 for 6) and Lidl (€1.59 for 8). Compared to 2022, the prices have almost all doubled!
