Nothing seemed to predestinate Clive to become his mistress’s medical guard and service dog, but it was his calling. Thanks to him, the young woman is better protected from crises.
In England, a couple’s pet became a medical assistance dog for their sick mistress, reports Subway.
Michelle Sutherland and her husband Chris had fallen in love with the only Cocker Spaniel puppy in her litter who wore a black and white dress. They adopted him and called him Clive.
The dog had quickly become a full member of the family with 2 other dogs called Border Terriers Oscar and Jeremy. Some time after the adoption of Clive, Michelle Sutherland began to feel trouble. She had fainted several times and simple infections refused to heal.
She noticed that at the same time Clive tended to lick his face and paw at his mouth. She took it for excessive affection, on the contrary Jeremy and Oscar behaved as normal.

Faced with the return of symptoms, she was hospitalized. The diagnosis fell; Michelle Sutherland suffers from a rare pathology calledaddison. It is characterized by a deficit in 2 hormones, aldosterone and cortisol in this case. In the event of severe shock, she may enter a potentially fatal comatose state.
One day, while attending a dog event, she met Dr. Claire Guestveterinarian and co-founder of the association Medical detection dogs. When Michelle Sutherland told him about his illness and the attitude towards Cliveexplained the GP that the dog was probably trying to warn her.
The English Cocker picked up on the olfactory cues coming from the mistress’s mouth, hence his insistence on this area.
Michelle Sutherland therefore unaware that she was in the presence of a dog naturally gifted at detecting her fits long before they occurred. On advice from Dr. Guestshe made him follow an 18-month training course, at the end of which Clive became his certified medical assistance dog.
“I found my freedom”
” Clive is brilliant. It can detect my drops in blood sugar and retrieve my test kit or jump in to alert me if I’m at risk of a seizure by slapping my mouth “, specified Michelle Sutherland on Subway.
Since then she has not had to stay in the hospital again. She always has her medicine at hand and Clive by his side. As soon as he gives her the “signal”, she knows she has half an hour to take her treatments.
” We go everywhere together and I found my freedom ” concluded the young woman.
