The “Pink Sauce”, a mysterious condiment that panics TikTok

TREND – Easily recognizable by its color, the “Pink sauce” is however not marketed in supermarkets. Sold by mail order in the United States, it is on TikTok and social networks that the sauce created by Chef Pii, a chef based in Miami, unleashes passions to the point that its creator suspended production and promised to review her copy. .

On June 11, Chef Pii featured this fuchsia-pink sauce in a video where she is seen tasting it on a piece of fried chicken, as you can see in the video above. This publication now has more than 820,000 views on the social network. Since then, all the sequences that followed have each garnered several hundred thousand views, with the most watched reaching 10 million. Lhe hashtag #PinkSauce has accumulated more than 290 million views.

Internet users quickly wanted to test the sauce, which had gone viral on social networks, including the color is reminiscent of Pepto Bismol, a well-known stomach-ache medicine in the United States. Feedback has been very mixed, with criticism and questions emerging as to the quality and composition of the product.

Criticisms and errors

The first criticisms made concern the color and texture of the sauce, which varies between batches and Chef Pii’s videos. Doubts have also been expressed about the quality of manufacture and conservation of the product, especially during transport, generating debates on the possible dangers associated with the consumption of the condiment.

The Pink Sauce contains milk and especially honey which in some cases can cause botulism, a serious neurological condition caused by a very powerful toxin produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. Many Internet users have cited these reasons to encourage their subscribers not to consume it. A person claimed on TikTok to have been hospitalized after consuming Pink Sauce. No expiry date appears, at the beginning, on the packaging nor any information concerning the storage conditions.

At first, Chef Pii refused to reveal the recipe for his sauce, before giving a partial list of ingredients: sunflower oil, pitaya (or “dragon fruit”), garlic, honey and chilli. She finally revealed the full composition of the product, which also contains water, distilled vinegar, Himalayan pink salt and less than 2% spices, lemon juice, milk and citric acid. .

mystery taste

On social networks, buyers have also denounced delivery and packaging problems. The first bottles had no expiration date. The price of the pink sauce, 20 dollars, is also a hindrance for some Internet users.

In the face of criticism, Chef Pii defended his creation in several videos published on social networks as well as in the media. The product is still in the testing phase, she told NBC News. The bottles sent are also prototypes.

The sauce is marketed by the chef without having yet been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This American agency is responsible for approving the placing on the market of foodstuffs and medicines. But Chef Pii benefits from the more flexible Florida legislation in this area.

It allows individuals to sell food with a low risk of foodborne illness produced in unlicensed home kitchens as long as their income does not exceed $250,000 per year.

We may know more about the taste of this sauce, which remains a mystery. It is said to be partly similar to that of ranch sauce but no one, including Chef Pii, has been able to describe the exact taste of the famous sauce.
