A Turkish man has been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of throwing his pregnant wife off a cliff to collect her life insurance.
Hakan Aysal, 41, was sentenced to life behind bars after being found guilty of pushing his seven-months-pregnant wife Semra Aysal, 32, off a cliff while on holiday at a popular tourist attraction in southern Turkey in June 2018. The New York Post writes.
Authorities believe Aysal lured his wife to the edge of the cliff by convincing her to take a selfie before pushing her away.
After his wife was killed by a 1,000-foot cliff fall, authorities say Aysal tried to cash in about $25,000 worth of life insurance he took out before the crime, but was prevented from doing so by a police investigation. .

Aysal initially pleaded not guilty, but he pleaded insanity at the last minute, which was heard by the Fethiye High Criminal Court, but ultimately rejected.
Witnesses to the killing and family members of the couple said Aysal’s calm demeanor after the incident sparked suspicions that the death was intentional.

“When we went to the Institute of Forensic Medicine to collect the body, Hakan was sitting in the car,” Naim Yolcu, the victim’s older brother, told the court. “My family and I were devastated, but Hakan didn’t even look sad.”
“My sister has always been against loans,” Yolcu added. “But after her death we learned that she had taken out a loan from Håkan in my sister’s name.”

Aysal must serve thirty years in prison before he is eligible for release.
Femicide has become a growing problem in Turkey, the New York Post reported, and the Stockholm Center for Freedom said this year that 246 women were murdered in Turkey in 2022.
