For sale at her stall, not féras and mountain trout, but … dead cats! Don’t worry, these are fake stuffed cats encased in ice, but the sight of them in this context is quite exciting.

This is, of course, the whole purpose of PETA France, an association for the defense of animal rights accustomed to forceful actions. Four of its members came from Lyon to organize this, which is aimed at a very touristic place, Pâquier, and takes as its setting the lake where fishing takes place.

Flyers in hand, Natasha Garnier guides the residents of Annecy and tourists, many of whom enjoy the sun at the end of August. She questions their taste for fish, which is “the animals most killed for food (…), torn from the seabed or piled up by the thousands on farms”she says. Behind this speech is the goal of PETA France to promote a vegan diet. “There are plant-based alternatives to tuna, salmon or even breaded fish”lists the activist.

“Everyone has their own way of eating”

On the public side, the stand is exciting. Some visitors take a look before moving on, others come closer to understand, children ask adults if they are real cats. In any case, far from everyone agrees on the question. There are those who do not plan to change their menu, like Christian and Josiane, a couple from Annecy. “Everyone has their own way of eating. It’s like religions. »

Laura, an Italian tourist, understands the use of this method to impress people. “It emphasizes a general and positive principle, which is to respect living beings”she ponders. Marie comes from Lyon and is more divided. “I think it is good to limit the consumption of meat and fish. After all, making people feel guilty isn’t necessarily the best solution. » What is certain is that kittens will not leave you indifferent.
