Moroccan industrialists ready to take up the challenge

As the application of the EU’s CO2 cap adjustment mechanism approaches, CGEM and the European Union (EU) organized a seminar on the EU’s Green Deal on 6 June in Casablanca, in the presence of representatives of four EU Directorates-General. A meeting whose purpose is to present the new industrial and environmental provisions of the European Green Pact as well as the opportunities it offers to the Moroccan private sector.

“The transition to a carbon-free and circular industry offers Morocco significant opportunities in terms of economic growth and access to new markets”, said Patricia Llombart Cussac, EU Ambassador to Morocco, during this meeting, noting that it also enables the creation of new jobs, especially for young people, and to attract the diffusion of new technologies.

The EU ambassador in Morocco also stressed that the green transition is urgent, on both sides of the Mediterranean, and the EU is determined to lead it together with its partners. The EU has engaged with Morocco through the Green Partnership signed in October 2022. This partnership opens up promising perspectives for Morocco thanks to its political will, its extraordinary potential, especially in renewable energy, and committed partners such as the European Union.

Similarly, Chakib Alj, President of CGEM, emphasized that “the entry into force of the Carbon Adjustment Mechanism at the borders of the EU is a major event. This is the first measure of its kind aimed at stimulating green innovation in the industrialized world. Morocco’s strategic industries are ready to take up this challenge and recognize the importance of this moment”.
During his speech at the opening of this meeting, in which the Directorate General for Neighborhood and Enlargement Negotiations (NEAR), the Directorate for the Environment, the Directorate for Energy, the Directorate for Taxes and Customs Union (TAXUD) and the Directorate for Climate Action (CLIMA) participated. ). Alj said that “European and Moroccan companies have a historic window of opportunity to create an innovative, green and common market – a model for the rest of the world”.

The chairman of CGEM also called on policy makers to continue to provide the incentives that stimulate innovation in green technologies, stressing the importance of finding the right balance between bringing new technologies to market and guaranteeing a just ecological transition and building strong global partnerships.
