Scientists confirm that you can communicate with your cat by blinking your eyes

We often hear that cats are cold and that it is difficult to get along with them. But according to a study published in Scientific reports, it is quite possible to communicate with these little felines, and even to smile at them. For that we must not show them our teeth, but squint our eyes and blink them slowly.

According to scientists, these simple little gestures make cats – whether you know them or not – more receptive and friendly.

“As someone who has both studied animal behavior and been a cat owner myself, it is fantastic to be able to show that cats and humans can communicate in this way, explained psychologist Karen McComb from the University of Sussex. It’s something that many cat owners had already suspected, so it’s exciting to have found evidence.’

Various experiments conducted with different cats have shown that they are more likely to blink slowly at humans after humans blink slowly at them, compared to the no-interaction condition. When reaching for them, cats are also more likely to approach them if the human has previously blinked.

“It’s something you can try with your own cat at home, or with cats you meet on the street. It’s a good way to strengthen the bond you have with cats. Try to look at them as you would, when you smile casually. way and then close your eyes for a few seconds. You’ll find that they themselves react in the same way and you can start some kind of conversation”concludes the scientist.
