As for dogs, the SPCA is looking for families without young children who have a lot of time to devote to the animal.

“We mainly have big dogs, dogs that are a little more difficult to adopt, so we are looking for experienced families,” explains Ms. Desaulniers.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the attraction for pets has been strong due in particular to isolation, but the SPCA warns people, there are several questions to ask before adopting.

“We invite people to go to our website and read about the needs of these animals,” says Desaulniers. “Rabbits need a big enclosure, they also need fresh vegetables every day, a turtle needs a big aquarium, so go read on the website to see if we can meet these needs. »

The box in the lease that allows landlords to prohibit pets in their homes is not unanimous. With 684 animals abandoned in Montreal alone since the beginning of 2022, many oppose it and suggest that the housing crisis will potentially increase this figure.

“Every day, we have abandonments of people who cannot find accommodation that accepts to welcome their animal, and it is not only for dogs, we also see it with rabbits and cats”, says the CEO of the SPCA. “We also have people who are victims of inflation, people who cannot afford to pay vet fees.”
